What is college for?

What is college (good) for?

College is good for many things. For many people, college is a major stepping stone to accomplish their desired career. But for some students, college is a waste and just somewhere their parents send them off to.  I want to recognize what college is for.

College is most important for you to further your education.  If you plan on getting a good career in the near future, enhanced education is required. Most fields have certain courses that are required before you can enter that field. Also, specialized training will occur in these required courses.  College is where you come to finish the necessary courses. Some students take these classes seriously but others do not. “Students have to demonstrate intellectual ability over time and across a range of subjects.” It is essential to display all your knowledge you have and never get lethargic with your work.

Another important reason why college is good is because it betters you as a person. Rose the author of Why School?  states “not just learning things to make a living, but also learning things to enable you to do things with your life, to enable you to find interests and pursuits that may in some way or another expand the way we see things.” These all are ways that make us become a better person.  Most people agree that college is the time usually when students mature into young adults. Joining clubs and organizations can be a way to help students become the best they can be and better themselves in so many way

Social skills are a major component to your future. Trying to get a job may come down to your social skills. In college you will meet many people, being friends, or important individuals, that you spend much time talking to. This all helps in your future when you are in a potential businesses office interviewing the “big boy.” College is also a new start for students to meet new friends that could possibly be your long-life friends.

Networking is essential to starting off your career. When trying to get a job, you may know people from college that work for the company you are interviewing for. Being in internships, clubs, study groups and more can help you meet many people that will someday help you when getting a job. You never know where a thread of friendship will take you.

In college, you find your direction in life. You find our major choice that leads to a good career. You find your long-life friends that you keep in touch with every now and then. You may possibly find you’re the person you spend the rest of your life with. And Lastly, You find yourself. We come into college not really sure who we are, but we learn some life lessons and go through some experiences that make us become ourselves. The author of the blog Why some graduates believe college was a waste of time says “I wouldn't be where I am today without the experiences and knowledge I gained from my time at university.”

Lastly, most important is creating lasting memories that will stick with you forever. Attending university football games, going to social events and meeting amazing friends are all great memories that you make in college. College would be one big blur if we did not wonderful opportunities to make memories. Culver-Stockton College states is their blog that “You’ll also create lasting memories that will serve as hallmarks for your college experience.”
